CASE STUDIES
Isle of Man Development Centres

CLIENT
Isle of Man Government
The Challenge
To design and implement development centres for aspiring senior and middle managers and to aspiring Chief Officers.
The Solution:
The Isle of Man has a talent management strategy, aimed at solving issues of succession management, ultimately to Chief Officer (Head of Department) roles. After a competitive tender, Human Assets were commissioned to design and implement development centres for aspiring senior and middle managers and this year the work was extended to aspiring Chief Officers. All the development centres have run several times and the work has featured handover to the client so that the Island now runs the senior and middle level centres independently and runs the Chief Officer centres also independently but with a Human Assets Director acting as one of the observers.
Outcome
The success of the three centres has been helped by the fact that delegates work on live issues for the Island, for example the introduction of wind farms. The relevance of the centres is therefore assured and obvious to all stakeholders. Success has also been assisted by the active endorsement by the head of the civil service and by the career management interventions engineered by the Learning and Organisational Development team.
